Ki Jung Do crest. It symbolizes the unification of arts in harmony balanced by the elements of fire and water. These elements are the creation and destruction of life.
Why Found and new style when there are already so many other styles available?
There is not one style that provides conducive strategies for all ranges of combat, while providing a law enforcement strategy that incorporates de-escalation strategies, articulation, the best of gross and fine motor, with no wasted time movement or energy, moving with purpose, and provides principals of control, and concepts of not hurting yourself during the application, as well as not giving up your environment because typically there is more than one "bad guy".
Having a background in some of the best and most recognized gross motor Arts:
Taekwon Do (both North and South Korean styles)
Kempo Karate
Combat Wu Shu
Boxing and Kick boxing
Muay Thai
And a background in some of the best and most recognized fine motor Arts:
Hapkido
Aikido
Jiu Jitsu
I was able to blend them incorporating the philosophy of no wasted time, movement, or energy, while moving with purpose from one fighting stance.
If you were to learn Taekwon Do, Kempo, Karate you would learn Kata or Patterns. These are fixed movements from a fixed stance, leaving vulnerable parts of your body exposed. I mean no disrespect in that statement. I have trained in those styles and can tell you that you spar completely different than you perform your Kata or Pattern, it should raise a question as to why?
What is Pattern or Kata?
A series of movements practiced over and over to create muscle memory. Muscle memory is a programed response. You perform free of thinking and emotion for a positive outcome, ie: you survive the encounter. Kata's or patterns typically require learning many different stances fixed movements and are fairly rigid. If the Kata or Pattern is not a reflection of true combat, which is dynamic and in motion, then what is it for? Exercise?
I have spent many years of my life teaching and training patterns as part of a structured curriculum for a structured organization. I have seen and performed some very beautiful patterns. I have been exposed to the best and most true tests of stress inoculation. Having to use it in real life situations (law enforcement), without a center judge, no time limits, referee, rules, someone who will respect a white towel being thrown in, or a dance floor in which to perform. Where a mistake is at best an injury but could cost you your life. I will state that not once in any of my situations have I ever unfolded a pattern that I have learned. I have found patterns to be to fixed and too rigid.
That being said, in any style that I have taken each person enrolled in that style believes it to be the best. Otherwise why would you settle?
How do you blend Aikido with Karate? Isn't that like Yin and Yang?
Yes... the traditional methods of teaching would have conflicting philosophies and styles. Which would leave the learner having to decipher which is the best application. If you hesitate in combat, you waste time, and are vulnerable. Having a background in the best of several gross and fine motor styles I have developed a method of harmony where both are conducive from one stance. Your fighting stance. The style of Ki Jung Do breaks many of the traditions and is meant to be ever evolving in line with it's philosophies of no wasted time, movement, or energy. Technology is ever advancing. Why should Martial Arts be any different?
Ki Jung Do is a Korean name and terminology to respect my foundation Arts. I have great respect for all Martial Arts and practitioners. I am giving back by creating a style the compliments and is conductive for realism. Ki is life energy or power. Jung Do when expressed together means right way or righteous way. It is about using your life energy/power the right way (without waste) or in a righteous way. Protecting and preserving life.
What Makes You Credible Enough to Become a Founder Master Hartley?
The Father of Taekwon Do (North Korean) General Choi was a fourth degree in Shotokan Karate and built Taekwon Do on the foundation of Karate and Taekyon (One of earliest forms of Korean Martial Arts). Bruce Lee was a Master of Gung Fu and developed Jeet Kune Do on the foundation of Gung Fu, Chinese and Western boxing. I utilize many of their philosophies within Ki Jung Do. I am a Master of Taekwon Do (7th degree). I have a strong foundation several Arts including weapons training. I am not seeking recognition or credit as a Founder. I have created a style that is 100% conducive to realism. It caters to law enforcement and allows you to have control of the environment and people in that environment. I ask that the generations to come make the required changes to keep Ki Jung Do conducive so that it is regarded as more than an Art and is ever evolving. I will share many secrets with you forcing me to create more.
